Laphroaig Select – An entry level Islay
Hey guys! How’s it going? ๐.
The weekend is finally here and what a rough week it was! ๐.
For this Friday I thought I’d jump on the Laphy train and have my first Laphroaig review. I decided to start with the Laphroaig Select, I’ve actually tried this one before at a tasting event and thought it was good ๐.
Did you know that the name Laphroaig Select is inspired by the careful selection of European and American oak barrels to age this whisky? It all started about 80 years ago, when the distiller Ian Hunter headed to the land of bourbon, America, in search of barrels that would give better consistency and unique flavors to single malt whisky. Inspired by his story, the producers used oloroso sherry barrels, new American white oak barrels, large PX barrels, quarter-century old oak barrels and of course, bourbon barrels. This maturation technique has created six new flavor combinations, of which only one has been chosen, called Laphroaig Select.
The expression is suitable for those who want to enjoy a special and charming whisky.
Here is my review:
Nose: Initial peat notes, followed by red fruit aromas, floral accents, marzipan and a splash of lime.
Palate: Sweet aromas of fruit and caramel, enriched with peat notes and subtle tones of smoke.
Finish: Long, pleasant, fruity.
Color: Amber gold.
While I am not a huge peated whisky fan, I can appreciate a good Islay whisky ๐.
What do you guys think about this one? Have you tried it? Are you a peated whisky fan?
Cheers guys and have a great weekend!๐ฅโจ๐ฅ.
