Jura Seven Wood – a disaster or a stroke of genius?

Hey guys. How’s it going?
I’m back with a very interesting review for you. It’s the Jura Seven Wood. The interesting part comes from the fact that this whisky is matured in a combination of seven different types of oak – first bourbon and then a finish in each of Vosges, Jupilles, Les Bertranges, Allier, Tronçais, and Limousin casks.

So just to answer the question from the title: is this a disaster or a stroke of genius? Well, to put it bluntly, neither!

I’ve read a lot of reviews online that simply destroy this whisky, they say it’s trash, really bad whisky, a waste of money and the rants go on. I honestly, while I don’t think this is an extraordinary whisky, still I don’t agree this is bad whisky. Now, of course, every palate is different, so opinions vary, but in truth (from my point of view at least) this is not a bad whisky at all.

Then why are there so many bad reviews online you ask? Well, I would say that this is in part due to the “purists”, the single cask lovers, enthusiasts and professionals lets say, that do not even think about doing something like this. These are the same people that will tell you to not even think about drinking your whisky with ice, God forbid to drink it with coke (not all of them of course, I don’t like to generalize). To that I say: drink your whisky (which ever brand you like) just the way you like it 🙂

In my opinion the Jura Seven Wood is a very interesting experiment and the result is a very interesting profile, check out my review below.

Nose: Nutmeg, chocolate nuts and raisins. Red fruit jam (like strawberry) and malt. Candied fruit and a hint of mint.

Palate: Rich coffee and creamy chocolate, then spicy with cinnamon and pepper. Oaky with tropical fruit and lemon zest with just a hint of smoke at the end.

Finish: Medium to long, with vanilla and mint chocolate, creamy coffee and light smoke at the end.

As you can see we end up with a nice combination of spicy combined with chocolate and fruit, thanks to a wide range of flavours from the casks.

What do you guys think about this one? 🙂 Have you tried it already?

Andrei Muresan

My name is Andrei, Andrei-Paul Muresan. I’m an IT professional, born in the wonderful year of 1982, in the heart of Transylvania (for people who don’t know, the heart of Transylvania is a city called Cluj-Napoca, located in Eastern Europe, in Romania to be more exact). Here’s a photo of me, just to put a face to the name 😉 I mentioned Transylvania because most people are more likely to know where Transylvania is and not where Romania is 🙂 oh and by the way, vampires, they’re just ghost stories, sorry to disappoint everybody. As you might expect, given my profession, I’m passionate about technology and everything that surrounds it, but I am also a great spirits fan, and when I say spirits I mean scotch, whisk(e)y and cognac, and I also enjoy a good cigar (I never say no to a good cigar). I like to mix all that with a good tune and also a good game, I own a couple of game consoles. I am, by no means, an expert in the scotch/whisk(e)y/cognac/cigar world, but I am keen on learning everything there is to know about it, so I’m launching an invitation to you, to join me in this virtual journey as we learn together.
