Getting into the Russian spirit

Hey guys! How’s it going? So the FIFA World Cup 2018 has started in Russia, so I thought I’d give you a nice refreshing mix for sipping while watching your favorite team playing in the World Cup. No, it’s not beer, let’s step away a bit from the classic football drink. Instead let’s get into the Russian spirit (pun intended) with a classic Russian spirit drink, of course it’s Vodka! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m not one for drinking vodka neat, as it des not really tastes like anything, instead let’s spice things up with adding some coffeeliqueur, this will make it even more refreshing and energising! Yes, I’m talking about the Black Russian cocktail ๐Ÿ˜‰

Origins

The Black Russian is a cocktail of vodka and coffee liqueur. It contains five parts vodka to two parts coffee liqueur, per IBA specified ingredients. Traditionally, the drink is made by pouring the vodka over ice cubes or cracked ice in an old-fashioned glass, followed by the coffee liqueur.[1]

This combination first appeared in 1949 and is ascribed to Gustave Tops, a Belgian barman, who created it at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels in honor of Perle Mesta, then United States Ambassador to Luxembourg.[2]The cocktail owes its name to the use of vodka, a typical Russian spirit, and the blackness of the coffee liqueur.

Ingredients
Here we go, here is the list of what you need to make the Black Russian.

What you need for ingredients and tools:

  • 1 Jigger 25ml/50ml
  • 1 tumbler glass
  • 1 bottle of vodka – I got the Beluga Noble Russian Vodka
  • 1 bottle of coffee liqueur
  • 1 cherry
  • 1 pin – for the cherry
  • Ice

Mixing it

OK, so now that we have all the ingredients, which are not that many as this is a very simple cocktail, we can start mixing the drink.

So, to mix it you need:

  • about 50ml of vodka
  • about 25ml of coffee liqueur
  • fill the tumbler glass with ice
  • pour the vodka and the coffee liqueur in the the glass
  • stir thoroughly

And that’s it, your Black Russian is ready! ๐Ÿ™‚

Just relax, sit back and sip this refreshing vodka based mix while watching your favorite team on the tube.

Now it’s your turn, try it ! And let me know about your experience with mixing your very own home-made Black Russian ๐Ÿ˜‰

Andrei Muresan

My name is Andrei, Andrei-Paul Muresan. Iโ€™m an IT professional, born in the wonderful year of 1982, in the heart of Transylvania (for people who donโ€™t know, the heart of Transylvania is a city called Cluj-Napoca, located in Eastern Europe, in Romania to be more exact). Hereโ€™s a photo of me, just to put a face to the name ๐Ÿ˜‰ I mentioned Transylvania because most people are more likely to know where Transylvania is and not where Romania is ๐Ÿ™‚ oh and by the way, vampires, theyโ€™re just ghost stories, sorry to disappoint everybody. As you might expect, given my profession, Iโ€™m passionate about technology and everything that surrounds it, but I am also a great spirits fan, and when I say spirits I mean scotch, whisk(e)y and cognac, and I also enjoy a good cigar (I never say no to a good cigar). I like to mix all that with a good tune and also a good game, I own a couple of game consoles. I am, by no means, an expert in the scotch/whisk(e)y/cognac/cigar world, but I am keen on learning everything there is to know about it, so Iโ€™m launching an invitation to you, to join me in this virtual journey as we learn together.
