The Godfather, how to get a good mix with amaretto
Hi guys!
So I’m back with a new post, again with a scotch based mix but this time with an amaretto mix, yes, you guessed it, it’s The Godfather!
This is a very simple cocktail to make and as I am a huge fan of The Godfather movie saga, it was a no-brainer really 🙂
The history of The Godfather cocktail
I’d like to start off with talking a bit about the history of this cocktail, since there is mixed information on it.
The information on it is not reliable, some claim that this was the favorite cocktail of actor Marlon Brando, known for playing the lead character in the popular American film adaptation of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, the popular mob movie. This may be an allusion to the cocktail’s prominent use of amaretto, an Italian liqueur.
Others say that Donato “Duke” Antone, a bartender form the 1950’s, invented the cocktail and a couple of others like the Rusty Nail, White Russian, Italian Fascination, Kamikaze, (groan) Freddie Fudpucker, and the Harvey Wallbanger.
But none of these claims give hard evidence of their theories, so take these with a huge grain of salt.
What we do know for certain is that it is part of the triad of the gangster cocktails made with Amaretto: French Connection, which uses Cognac instead of whisk(e)y and Godmother, which uses vodka.
What you need for ingredients
1 Jigger 25ml/50ml
1 mixing spoon
1 tumbler glass
Amaretto liqueur – I got the Amaretto Royal Conti
Scotch – I chose the The Glenlivet 15y, but you can have any whisk(e)y that is to your liking, wether single malt or blended
1 orange
Ice
How to make it
Put ice in the glass, pour ingredients into the glass (50ml of scotch and 25 ml of amaretto) and stir. Garnish with an orange twist, optional.
And that’s it really! This is one of the most basic cocktails you can make yourself, it’s that simple.
So, try it out if you haven’t already and let me know your experience.
