Mixing the Old Fashioned
Hey guys ! So as the title pretty much say it, I tried mixing myself a home made Old Fashioned.
I got the idea while looking for interesting mixes which are whisk(e)y based and as I got a fresh new Monkey Shoulder bottle, it was a no-brainer really ๐
I’m sure you can find a lot of articles online on how this is done, but none of them really tell you what is all the stuff you need to do this properly, at least that is what I found. So, let me tell you about my experience ๐
So like I said, after getting a Monkey Shoulder bottle, I started looking for interesting mixes that are whisk(e)y based. Since Monkey Shoulder is famous for being a very good whisky which is used in a lot of cocktails nowadays, I though I’d use it for my mix. Oh and if you’re a Mad Men fan, you will know about the Old Fashioned and will appreciate it more ๐
There are a lot of variations of this mix, but the below was my choice.
Let see what you need to get this done right.
What you need
1 bottle of whisk(e)y – in my case I choose the Monkey Shoulder
1 bottle of sugar syrup – I got the Monin Pure Cane Sugar
1 Bottle of Orange bitter – I got the Angostura orange bitter – I heard it’s the best for this
1 mixing glass
1 measurement glass
1 tumbler glass
1 Jigger 25ml/50ml
1 mixing spoon
1 orange
1 cherry
1 toothpick
Dry Ice, or just regular ice
Just a note here, you can get the same I got above, or you can have whatever works for you, for instance you don’t have to get all the glasses and jigger and so on, as long as you can measure the ingredients and mix them the right way you should be fine ๐
So, then how do you make it?
Well, there are a lot of recipes on line for this mix, I actually chose the one from Monkey Shoulder’s web site
- Add all ingredients to mixing glass
- Add cold dry ice and stir
- Once dilution is reached strain into glass
- Twist orange peel over glass.
- Drop the cherry in and you’re done ! You got yourself an Old Fashioned !
I actually pinned an orange slice and the cherry together using a wooden toothpick, you can probably get a more fancy pin for this, but this worked like a charm for me !
You can also squeeze the orange peel over the glass for some extra taste, I added just a few drops of lime in there, it’s absolutely delicious !
Here’s a closer look at the finished mix !
Now it’s your turn, try it ! And let me know about your experience with mixing your very own home-made Old Fashioned ๐
